While in PreCalc, I enjoyed the course but remember being too intimidated to go directly to AP Calc BC from there.
Many of you may be in this same position– wondering if Calc AB or BC is a better fit for you.
One thing to consider is that AP Calc BC tests you out of two semesters of university Calculus (assuming you get a 4 or higher on the AP Calc exam), while AB tests you out of Calculus I, which is only the first semester of college calc.
With that said, AP Calc BC is both a complete review and continuance of AB, which means it moves much faster. It requires more studying, homework, and a faster instruction pace. Ultimately, anyone can take AP Calc BC if they are willing and have enough time to dedicate to the course. Both Calc AB and BC start from the very foundations of calculus.
Because I took PreCalc as a sophomore, I was able to take AB my junior year and BC senior year. This gave me a solid calc foundation as I spent the first semester of Calc BC reviewing what I had learned the first year. I was grateful for this, but looking back, I wish I had challenged myself to Calc BC so I could have taken Multivariable calculus.
Ultimately, to make this decision, you must consider your passion for math, your intended major, your resiliency for learning hard math concepts, and the amount of time you can dedicate to your Calc class.
