/ Meet Makenna
Not just a tutor but a cheerleader.
I believe in tutoring.
I have witnessed its power from a tutor perspective: one of my favorite success stories is about a student who entered Math 3 hopeless in her math skills. She had an F sitting in the grade book at the time we started meeting. After hours of reviewing the basics, practicing, and developing a true understanding that there is someone who believes in her, she finished the year with an A, confident enough to advance to the higher level of math the next year. 🥳👏
Recently, I have also witnessed its power from a tutee perspective: During my second year of college, I got so behind in course material that I began feeling overwhelmed and discouraged– to the point that I contemplated dropping the degree. Miraculously, I found a tutor willing to work with me consistently and it turned my dread for class into excitement, fear of approaching professors into curiosity, and lack of confidence into confidence.
The research also believes in tutoring.
The 2 Sigma Problem by educational psychologist Benjamin Bloom asserts that “The average student under tutoring was about two standard deviations above the average of the control class.”
As your future math tutor, let me simplify that for you: Compared to the ‘average’ student who typically falls around the 50th percentile, those enrolled in (effective) tutoring consistently score within the top 2% of the distribution, on average.
I share this with you because it fuels my passion for my work. My motivation to help my students succeed is the basis of my philosophy.
I also believe that there is no such thing as a “math person.” There is such a thing as a damaged math identity, or neurological differences that necessitate alternative teaching methods, or simple lack of motivation (the list continues). Despite this, I believe that these setbacks can be restored through discussion, developing a growth mindset, applying students’ learning preferences, and teaching problem solving (i.e. math) in the context of meaningful situations.
My goal is to make math tangible, interesting, and logical.
I believe that Math teachers (& tutors) are so important for igniting passion. Learning about sine and cosine is the technical, and might I say… boring side of math. What is the point of teaching kids to solve a quadratic equation? Not necessarily about its utility… teaching math is about a way of thinking. Just like “English language” is different from “English literature”, we need to create a “Math Literature”: where Math is necessitated and its beauty is illustrated.
Passion promotes curiosity and exploration, which leads to logical thinking and tenacious problem solving– all essential ingredients for great mathematicians. This, along with the necessary resources for success, is what I desire to impart on your child.
I have tutored 6th-12th grade Math for the past 7 years. Since COVID I moved my lessons online and have put together a plethora of resources that I offer my students.
I assistant taught in Algebra 1 & 2 classes at Amador Valley in 2021-22. This gave me great insight into teachers’ teaching styles and expectations, as well as first hand exposure to the flaws of the “one size fits all” model.
Testimonials
“Makenna has been helping me with math for 3 years now. I can always rely on her to help me fully understand any questions I have. If I don’t have any questions, she will always have work prepared for review or to help me get ahead of current curriculum. Makenna is patient, always positive, and good at communicating. She always goes above and beyond and you can tell that she wants all of her students to reach their full potential.”

“Makenna helped me not only understand the mathematical concepts, but their practical application as well. Lessons with her were, without fault, engaging and the time she spent preparing showed during our sessions. I’d recommend Makenna to anyone looking for a math tutor to help them understand and excel in math!”

“Makenna was extremely patient when working with me and was open to any questions I had. She would always make a special effort to ensure I understood the concept. She focuses on each individual student and your learning needs. It was always a enjoyable experience as she made learning fun.”

“When I began Algebra 2 I quickly felt like I was falling behind and not grasping the concepts. When I started meeting with Makenna almost twice a week my grade instantly started to go up. By the end of the school year my confidence in math was higher than it had ever been. With Makenna’s approach to tutoring I was able to finish the year with an A.”

“Makenna helped me improve my grade. My test score average before I tutored with Makenna was a 50% and after working with Makenna my test score average was a 75%. Before working with Makenna my grade was a D- and I ended my semester with a B.”

“I owe Makenna my true appreciation for all the progress my daughter has made in math. Cecilia began her Sophomore year with no confidence in herself and literally almost gave up on math alone. I was referred to hire Makenna as tutor in my daugher’s junior year. I could not have made a better choice! Makenna instilled SO much confidence in Cecilia and had so much patience with her that she went from a D to an A and gained enough confidence to enroll in a higher math course her senior year! Makenna gave my daughter something tutoring centers could never do and for that I can’t thank her enough!”

“I highly recommend Makenna Warner as a tutor. As a parent of a high school student, I have had the pleasure of working with Makenna for the last 3 years. Makenna has tutored my daughter in math but also assisted with making sure she is staying current in her other classes. Working with Makenna alleviated a lot of the anxiety my daughter experienced in school, drastically helped improve her grades and has prepared her for high school. We are so blessed to have had the opportunity to work with Makenna these last few years. Makenna has a talent for teaching simple and advanced topics, explaining concepts in a way that my daughter was able to understand and retain. Makenna is well organized, has excellent communication skills and was such a pleasure to work with. Makenna always has such a positive attitude. I recommend Makenna to you without reservation.”
